What is a Credit Score?
Planning a big purchase, such as a car or a house? Or perhaps you're considering a personal loan or credit card to fund home improvements, a wedding, or your next travel adventure? Checking your credit score can help you make informed decisions and guide your applications in the right direction.
But what exactly is a credit score? More importantly, how can you find yours, and how do you know if it’s good enough to achieve your plans? Let’s break down what makes up this all-important number and explore how to check, understand, and use your credit score to your advantage.
Credit Scores Explained
First, it’s important to understand that there’s no universal credit score. Instead, your score is calculated based on information from one of the three main UK credit reference agencies: TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax. Each agency uses a slightly different scoring system, with some scales going up to 1,000, while others have narrower ranges. Generally, the higher your score, the better your chances of being approved for credit.
When you apply for credit, lenders use your credit score along with your credit data from the agencies they work with and other data they have access to about you to make a decision about whether to lend to you or not. Understanding where your credit score sits can help you gauge whether your profile is strong enough to access top-tier deals or if you might need to aim for options more suited to your current situation.
Where Can I Check My Credit Score?
If you are already a member of Credit Engine, you can check it right here with us. As part of your membership, all members have access to their credit scores with TransUnion and Equifax via the dashboard. You can also access your score directly from the Credit Reference Agencies themselves
What is a Good Credit Score?
Each UK credit reference agency uses a different scoring scale, but the general rule is the higher, the better. For example, TransUnion is one of the Credit Scores we work with and uses a scoring system with a maximum score of 710. The closer your score is to 710 the better.
How is Your Credit Score Calculated?
Credit agencies and lenders use a variety of factors to calculate your score. These include:
● Payment History: Whether you’ve missed or made late payments.
● Credit Utilization: How much of your available credit you’re using.
● Debt Levels: The total amount of money you owe.
● Length of Credit History: How long you’ve held accounts or lending relationships.
● Public Records: Information such as electoral role, court judgments, IVAs and bankruptcies
● Borrowing Behavior: How often you search for credit and how many credit accounts you have.
All of this data is processed using an algorithm, which generates your credit score. This algorithm is secret so while we know the above items are influencers only the credit reference agencies know exactly how it is calculated.
